It emerged in the beginning of the 20th Century, Art Deco is an
elegant style of decorative art which began as a modernist reaction
against the art nouveau style. Art Deco works exhibits aspects of
(cubism, futurism, etc) with abstraction, distortion and simplification,
particularly geometric shapes and highly intense colours – celebrating
the rise of commerce, technology and speed. Designers experimented
with materials resulting in the use of chrome, plastics, and other
industrial materials. The style and design aspects with all it’s
geometric forms permeated almost every facet of life. Including,
architecture, home furnishings, appliances, interior decoration
in it’s high style and diversity of geometric design.
At his Atelier João Pinto forms a group together with some young
Portuguese self-taught artists. The work of these artists is straight
from the heart, excluding any formal training or established techniques.
Acrylic painting has been a self-taught medium for this group who
have a sense of fashion in art, or commitments to style. In their
recent series of paintings they execute works, employing various
compositional devices and colour combinations.
